1.6D Gearbox Query
Hello
Im picking up a westy soon with a 1.6d engine but no gearbox. Planning to run it for a while before restoring, any thoughts on what box I can pop into it, even just to get me by for a while....?
Previous owner said it was a 4 speed DK box but looking at the link below a DK box was for an Aircooled engine

depends on age of van pre 83 they used an Aircooled box
there's a 5 speed for 1.6D on ebay if it's a later van

I am about to remove the engine and gearbox from my 1.6D (CS engine code). It has a 4 speed gearbox which will be available for sale either with or without the ancillary parts. Looks like I’m a long way from you but we might be able to sort something out if you’re interested.

If you have an early van there is also a DH Aircooled box listed which would need a diesel bell housing and input shaft, if you could find them at a reasonable price. The DH is cheap because it is not sought after ,on the plus side it has not had a Diesel engine hammering at it all its life! Not at all sure you should go this route because you will very quickly be pulling it out in favour of something with more than 50 b h p and the DH won’t be suitable for any engine upgrade ,not even a1.6 turbo .
However please don’t rely on my words alone I am no expert! Maybe there is good reason Aidan did not mention this one !

Hello thanks for all the replies so far, got a couple of photos of the old box, looks like it is a DK! So this must meant its an early can using an Aircooled box?
Do this mean I will need a direct replacement to use the bell-housing? Or can I change the box for a DH box as Cecil suggested or a DU box maybe?
OG thanks for the offer but I'm not looking to spend anything much on the van, just get it running so a friend can use it for a while before deciding whats to be done with it

when was the van built or was it a petrol van converted to diesel ? You'd only use the Aircooled 091 box with the 3 stud mount if the engine is fitted with the early engine mounts and you have the longer 548mm drive shafts
bellhousings and input shafts can be changed
DH is lowest geared option 5.43 final drive 0.85 fourth gear, fitted to 1.6 petrol engine
DM was the box originally fitted to 1.6D upto 83. 5.43 final drive with 0.82 forth
DK is the 2 litre box 4.57 final drive 0.82 fourth
If you have space to break OBG van that's a no brainer

Built in 1983, its always been a Diesel van as far as the current owner knows and he has had it for at least 10 years.

I think most of these ratio charts have some mistakes in them.
Also some ‘ boxes can have 2 possible diff ratios , but both share the same gearbox code.
The one you have a link to shows the D H the same ratios as the D M. Apart from a rounded up final drive figure .
ACP ,along with many of the later 1.6 D ‘ boxes seem to be even lower geared than the DH.
I expect there are many cases that have been rebuilt with different to original internals.
The DK was surely completely the wrong ratios for the CS engine , it would be interesting to know how it drove!

ACP is a watercooled type 091/1 4-speed box for the 1,6 CS engine, 5.5 final drive 0.85 fourth gear
later gearboxes used the cheaper to mass produce Gleeson type crown and pinions and fewer variants hence the slightly different ratios 6 tooth pinion 33 tooth crown wheel = 5.5
earlier Klingenberg pattern crown and pinion were 32/7, 34/7, 38/7, 41/7 - only the 32/7 variant was continued with and the 34/7 and 38/7 most common variants being replaced with the 29/6 and 33/6 Gleeson pattern ones 4.83 and 5.5 ratios, which were all that were available in 5 speed, there was a 35/6 available in 4 speed for low powered, load lugger, n/a diesel vans
