WBX Polo oil filter pressure comparison

Post by itchyfeet »

I posted this up on somebody's thread years ago and can never find it so here it is with a name that can be found easily.

R0B wrote:Does the smaller oil filter you have to use when fitting the speed shop one to a 2.1 make any difference? If not, then what is the point of the bigger one?

I wondered this ( as I was consiering buying one) and so I tested one on my tintop recently which has good oil pressure

A fresh W712/52 filter showed about 0.5 bar lower than a 6 month old standard filter at 80 degrees and 2000 rpm, by the time the oil got to 100 the difference was less maybe 0.2 bar down.

I'd say you would not want to let the smaller filter get old and clogged but a fresh one is OK I think if you have good oil pressure.

I would be concerned about using 20W50 and if I had poor oil pressure

I remembered CJH did some homework on this and posted the results, and somehow Tapatalk search found it. http://forum.club8090.co.uk/viewtopic.p ... 9#p8231159" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I know I've been using the Mahle equivalent for some time, but couldn't remember the part number OTTOMH, and my stock's in storage 300 miles away.

Personally I can't see why Speedshop don't acknoledge the smaller filter is a compromise and change their design.
