DRIVESHAFT

Post by cwe »

Hi
Would like a bit of advice on my CV driveshaft, last year had the whole driveshaft replaced after having a knocking from the rear drivers side ,all well untill coming home from a trip and noticed a knocking again when I went around a roundabout and when I took a right turn,
now been doing a bit of research and it maybe loose bolts (6 spline ) or maybe grease dried up ?
so im going to try and tighten them and see if thats my problem,
but would a drive shaft after say 2000 miles fail this early ? or could it be a cheap inferior replacement fitted ? or could it be something else failing ?
and if it is the driveshaft what does anyone suggest change both sides (whole shafts) at the same time ?
and whats the best ones to purchase , was looking at the brickwerks ones at £180 each, as I don't mind paying for good quality
appreciate your views folks

There is no point , rhyme or reason to change the actual shaft, unless it’s missing or damaged it’s just a shaft .
Cheap CV joints are a false economical mistake , and frankly why would anyone want to do that black sticky horrible job more than once every 100 thousand miles ?

It’s quite likely that it’s lack of grease , the replacement joints don’t come with enough imho .

When you get under to inspect the bolts and they are not loose , gove the shaft a "wiggle " from gearbox to wheel a few times , you will feel if the grease is missing or clumped. Fully inspect the booots too as this new fangled non rubber they make them from is useless and lasts about as long as it takes to fit them

cheers Mock
ill try that , when I said driveshaft I meant the whole thing shaft and CV's (gearbox and wheel) as just changing one cv I may as well change the whole unit,

i replaced mine with a complete unit (both joints and drive shaft) and was definitely a false economy. failed on me so not only had to do the whole job again but cost me the truck journey home :(

I used these

But sadly they seem to have joined the ever growing out of stock list .

Problem with a lot of the cheap drive shafts is you can’t fit standard cvs to them , I never understand why people fit parts that aren’t needed, if one cv is faulty , why replace 2 a d a driveshaft ?

Eurocarparts sell GKN LoBro CV joints. Buy one joint and fit that , if its all that's needed.
