Dg 1.9 no tick over
Can anyone give me something else to try? I cannot get my dg to tick over when the choke comes off. So far I have;
checked and replaced the hoses between the carb and airbox, and carb and dizzy,
stripped, cleaned, and put new gaskets and diaphragms into the carb.
new plugs, new plug leads, new dizzy cap, new rotor arm
Replaced the fuel filters, hoses, and completely drained the fuel sysyem and put good quality fuel in.
Squirted wd40 over every joint on the intake side to listen for a change in engine note
Checked the timing, voltages to cutoff solenoid, listened for the cutoff solenoid click.
Its now driving me mad and I'm about to push it all the way to the coast and off a cliff.
Any suggestions other than a watery end would be welcome.
Cheers all
Andy

Go back to basics. Have you tried adjusting idle screw?
Youve not mentioned this in your posting.

Re: Dg 1.9 no tick over
I tried adjusting it but it seems to make no difference. Except make the plugs blacker.

Re: Dg 1.9 no tick over
There's a blockage somewhere on the idle circuit.
Or
There's an undiscovered air leak.
Or
The idle cutoff has been connected to the carb heating circuit
Now that you have moved the mixture screw it will need a gas analyser to set it properly

Re: Dg 1.9 no tick over
I've not altered the mixture, just the idle tickover screw that's accessible from the front of the engine (opens the throttle closed end position).
I'm not sure where else there could be a leak, someone suggested there is a leak in the hose that comes off the brake servo but I can't find any reference to that in the Haynes bible.

Re: Dg 1.9 no tick over
Ah sorry my mistake.
There are many culprits for air ingress.
Diapragms:-
Distributor
Choke pull down
2nd throttle
Brake servo
Hoses
To all the above
If the servo hose is a braided type they are notorious for leaking

Re: Dg 1.9 no tick over
You say the plugs are sooty when you increase the tickover, that would suggest to me that its running rich.

That would suggest to me confusing mixture adjustment with tickover/idle screw.

Re: Dg 1.9 no tick over
He replied to Kev's post saying it wasn't the mixture screw he adjusted but the idle tickover adjustment.......

Re: Dg 1.9 no tick over
Agreed But adjusting idle rarely make plugs sooty.
Go back to basics..
Fuel filters?
Only one fuel filter required near tank.
Adjust mixture to workshop manual set up. 2.5 turns from stop?
Check idle stop screw is set up properly and touching cam.

Re: Dg 1.9 no tick over
Definitely back to basics.
When did it stop idling. Was this a gradual fault or did it happen suddenly, or is the vehicle new to you ? What else have you done and why ?
How does the van drive. Is it OK, or a bit slow / coughy on acceleration ?
I suspect there are probably two things going on here:- Rich mixture and blocked idle jet but go through the correct diagnostic process.

Re: Dg 1.9 no tick over
The op said that the carb has been stripped, might not be a blocked idle jet.

Re: Dg 1.9 no tick over
It might not be, but it may be as well. There's no mention about removing the jets to clean them. I was just putting ideas out there. (and have suffered from the blocked idle jet problem)
