Re: Engine identification
Can anyone decipher this engine number please? Appears to have a 'cat' looks like a 2.1, should be a 2.1 but maybe a replacement 'MV'? rather than the 2.1Dj it left the factory with.... Also has a 3 number code on the bell housing '954'

Re: Engine identification
That’s not where the engine number is
It’s on the flat at the bottom of the oil breather

Re: Engine identification
Ok so this is the engine number. Looks like 1988? That seems odd as the van is E reg?
ECU seems to be MV and a Cat is fitted.
Did Vw fit remanufactured DJ's somehow reconfigured as MV's?
Not that any of this matters much but interesting to know....

Re: Engine identification
Engine number is sequential, this appears to be a VW recon unit, date unknown, but the 954 number should be on both halves of the engine case, and I'd guess the rebuild date as week 7 2010. production engine numbers only went upto 080700 for DJ
As to whether it's a DJ or a MV inside it is probably a DJ, and very likely came from the batch of 25 or so engines that VW sold out of Milton Keynes as a job lot after they established the TPS network and moved warehousing to Dordon, but the engines had a white paper sticker on them usually on the top right side of engine with the engine part number and the suffix would be the identifier. DJ engines were supplied with a new rear pulley with 5' timing mark the same as MV for running on unleaded 95ron fuel as the original fitment DJ 's timed at 10' for 4 star fuel.
You may also find initials and dates stamped on the heads in smaller characters which are typical of late Polish built VW recon units
As long as it has lambda probe and no exhaust leaks then it will run pretty optimally

Re: Engine identification
Thanks Aiden, it does have the 3 digit code on both halves and in a different type face from my syncro. That is exactly the kind of fascinating info I'd hoped the Forum might provide. Given the 7 to 10 year lay up and the mileage from 2010 which would be less than 3000 miles is there anything I should or should not do to preserve the engine and hopefully ensure a long and happy life together?
