Re: Top up tank empty after 10 mile round trip
Daisy is going back in to get bodywork done and an engine service in a few weeks, I guess I'll add in coolant system check over to the list of work needing done. Bleed her, check pipes / replace pipes and a new header tank sounds in order at a minimum. No harm in getting it all checked out.
I'm determined to get some use out of the old girl before the year's out!! I did really enjoy our short range day trips last weekend and crave many many more
Very much appreciating the support from the forum too, without your encouragement I wouldn't be doing all the reading I've been doing and poking around in the engine bay trying to learn more.
Thank you.

Mine was doing this, I thought it was leaking from tej coolant sensor. But when I checked it, it had a crack in the header bottle
Replaced sensor o-ring and bottle and dalek cap for less than 30 quid and 20 minutes work, been fine ever since.

Re: Top up tank empty after 10 mile round trip
I’m using a garage in Dunfermline, I got all sorts of silly quotes to get through my MOT but got a reasonable one from this garage.
He’s done all the structural welding and patched holes that were needed for MOT. I got a quote for a second phase of work which will include new cab doors, replacement tailgate and bodywork like new with paint. Engine should be getting an overhaul at the same time and we’ve discussed changing head gasket.
All in I got a very reasonable quote and I can let you know how it all goes. https://multifixgarage.co.uk/ is the garage, the owners have been very much a can do attitude and made me feel looked after where others have just seen cash signs.
They’re not a dedicated VW garage and to be honest I just want a van I can use rather than a show van so quite happy to let things play out and enjoy the van.
Will keep you posted.

I should add I found them via whocanfixmycar.com and they were the top rated in the area so I gave them a call.

In case anyone is interested I found this manual that has a good section on the cooling system in the t25 (and in fact everything else) https://siradventure.files.wordpress.co ... l-1983.pdf

Re: Top up tank empty after 10 mile round trip
I had that problem on mine, I had a cracked header tank. In the end I just did a coolant drain and replaced the tank.. which was a good thing because it all came out a nice rusty brown... yum.
Side note, Check to make sure your radiator warms up evenly as well.. maybe an air lock in the system and it's just working through it?. Have you bled the radiator?

Re: Top up tank empty after 10 mile round trip
Fair enough Mocki, am doing one last 10 mile round trip before next round of work on the van which will be including drain and replace header tank + any other leaky problems.
Hope it all goes well, what I've noticed is if I keep the header tank topped up it doesn't empty during journeys, just the top up tank empties. If I leave the van sitting for a while and go back, the header tank is low but never empty so I've been topping it up and going for short journeys to cook and enjoy the scenery near by.
Dunno if that's suicidal or not.
Cheers
Fun.

Re: Top up tank empty after 10 mile round trip
see now you have added that info, it is pointing towards just the cap, or the pipe from it to the top up tank.....
you REALLY need to do more investigating yourself, before paying out for simple swapping work .

Re: Top up tank empty after 10 mile round trip
In total agreement about buying gizmos, wasn’t rushing out to buy one. I do genuinely appreciate the help I’ve been getting on here, I hope I haven’t taken the mickey, I have been trying to monitor the issue whilst not really using the van till I could identify/describe the issue properly so I can fix it myself or let a pro do it this time round and maybe try myself next time.

Re: Top up tank empty after 10 mile round trip
I wonder if this thread describes a problem that I have that appears to be similar.
Engine temp is always fine, no cooling issues. Gauge normally in lower quarter.
I noticed the other day (after 100s of miles, a few months) that the header tank wasn't quite full, it was just above the hose to the 'gallery' that runs around the hatch when cold.
So I filled it back up to the brim.
50 miles later and it has dropped back to where it was.
No signs of leaks or dribbles. Top up tank at max when cold.
The level in the header to which the coolant drops is always the same. It would appear that the after the first drop of a couple of inches worth of coolant the level remains steady (when seen cold). Dalek cap is blue and recent.
Now I admit I haven't looked at it when hot and running yet but where should I be looking? At the level sender's seal? Might I too have a cracked header tank?
Or should I just keep an eye on things?
