Petrol / Diesel tank are they the same?

Post by Lonewalker »

Are the fuel tanks the same? On the Brickwerks site and others the fuel tank is not specified as either. If I bought a used diesel tank could I clean it and use it on a petrol van?

My van is a 2.0l CU early petrol air cooled van 1981

Thanks

As far as I know there were only two variations of fuel tank: difference was in the diameter of the hole where filler neck entered tank

There are three different 2wd ones, all will work with a CU
No difference tween agricultural fuel and petrol for carb engines , but early has a small fill hole . Which means changing the whole filler pipe to late as early not available, and then there is the petrol tank for injection engines , which has a swirl pot in the tank , will work fine on a carb engine also

I didn't realize that! Does that mean that there is/should be more to the outlet on my WBX tank than just a piece of steel tubing?
Iv'e had the tank out a couple of times and never gave it a second thought. Only owned the van since 2006.
Must pat attention Mr Bean.

Slight oops there, Steve. Early has a larger hole (early 68mm & late 48mm). To use the early tank with a late plastic filler use the conversion grommet from Brickwerks.

As Steve said, you can't use the early filler neck (like yours probably has) with a late tank.
