Re: Missing dalek cap outlet and oil breather hose
Thanks for the updates. I was thinking belts too but wanted to measure first. Reckon I ought be able to get those locally.
Re the distributor, what's the best plan of action? I'm thinking get a proper one off a van that's being broken, unless you can get new ones which I think you can't?
Cheers, I'll be with the van again tomorrow and will take some complete engine bay pics.

Re: Missing dalek cap outlet and oil breather hose
Having had a look around it seems that there are some "new" distributors available, but I have no idea as to the quality.
There's a gsf one but I'm inherently suspicious and not sure it would suit the 1.9dg as it seems to have no info about exactly which engine it's for
https://www.gsfcarparts.com/920vg0210" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Then there's aircooledvw who carry but I think I would also need the late distributor cap ('pin type')
https://www.coolairvw.co.uk/Item/Shop_b ... s-CB-.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Either of those look any good?
Cheers Patrick

Call Andrew at Campershack http://www.thecampershack.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; or Mick at NWVW http://nwvw.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and see if they have one is best. Is the ignition amp and wiring still there? Some aftermarket distributors do away with them I think.
It's a fine line between putting things right and introducing new parts and potentially new faults at the 11th hour which you will get the blame for.
Anybody who buys a 30+ year old van and thinks they can go off on a road trip without first shaking down any fualts and giving some time ( weeks) to prove they are fixed is dare I say...foolish.

Re: Missing dalek cap outlet and oil breather hose
Thanks for the advice, yes I'm very aware of the need to not change things that are "ok but not perfect" and cause new problems or complications.
What I am really aiming to do is set him up in the best position I can in the very short time available to make the chance of him getting round Europe without easily avoidable problems as great as possible.
Clearly there's some naivety here but I expect we've all been there with our first van.. and I don't want to dampen his very understandable enthusiasm unduly. But also I don't want his van to blow up
I've never worked on a distributor so.. Is the 009 distributor actively really bad for the engine (like running without enough oil or coolant) or is it something that's likely to grumble on but really should be replaced when possible?
I think I'm going to just do the fuel lines, sort the dalek cap and tank and fit the breather hose and send him on his way.
Are there any good t25 garages on the way to Spain? Thinking I might get a distributor shipped out to him once he's had a chance to get used to running the van for a bit.

Re: Missing dalek cap outlet and oil breather hose
An update - fuel feed lines replaced and breather tower pipe renewed.
Now we know how to take the oetiker clips off, the owner has replaced the dalek cap and renewed the hose to the expansion tank.
Fuel return line replacement also possible now the clips are removable.
Some pics showing the engine bay entirely before work commenced and a quick pic of the new fuel line.
Can you spot the missing piece of the thermostat?

pipes wrong, should be like this but spigot snapped off thermostat housing.
Begs the question what's on the spigot behind where the inlet manifold should connect?

Re: Missing dalek cap outlet and oil breather hose
these two pipes to the heads tend to split because they move a lot with the engine, worth inspecting and if they looks OK worth your friend taking spares.
Left hand one split on me last your just before a holiday right hand one split on me this year in France.

Ignition amp should be here so it's been removed, this means you can't just fit a DG distributor, you would need the amp and wiring also.

this pipe could potentially rub on the fan belt so I cable tie mine to the bracket

whats going on here?, this looks like the main cable running to the rear lights, it should not be hanging down near the exhaust it should be tied away by chassis

Re: Missing dalek cap outlet and oil breather hose
this pic shows tin splash guards missing either side.
if its wet when driving lots of water will be thrown up by wheels into engine bay and may get into electrics and ignition causing a breakdown.

Can I put a picture of my engine on here and have a full team diagnostic as well? This is fantastic!
