Missing dalek cap outlet and oil breather hose
A friend has just bought a 1988 tintop 1.9dg.
He asked me to come and have a look at it, because the temperature gauge was getting a bit high, and when he went to add coolant to the expansion tank it just came straight out the bottom!
Looking at the van, it has had its hose cut off at the bottom of the expansion tank, and the cap on the main coolant tank is black and had no outlet nozzle to clamp a hose onto.
My assumption is that this is a replacement cap of the wrong sort, and he should replace it with one that does have a nozzle to connect the hose to and run a new hose between the two tanks.
Is there any reason that the hose was supposed to be cut?
The oil breather tower pipe to the air inlet is also missing - I'm assuming this should be replaced, but is there any reason that that was supposed to be missing?
I've also spotted the questionable fuel lines and will help replace them with brickwerks pipe. Does anyone know of the top of their head what diameter they should be? I think 8mm but could have missremembered that.
I also said to join the forum! He's off to Spain in a few days so looking to order from Brickwerks tomorrow!
Cheers
Patrick

OMG what a bodge, the pipe from the oil breather to the pancake is missing so if it's not blocked it will be drawing in unfiltered air.
Also there is a plastic petrol filter right above a very hot engine, asking for an engine fire, remove it immediately.

for a DG
https://www.brickwerks.co.uk/fuel-hose- ... 5-5mm.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
or just get this...
https://www.brickwerks.co.uk/fuel-feed- ... 9l-dg.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
need to do return pipe too that's not in the kit so buy an extra meter of the 5.5 hose.

Re: Missing dalek cap outlet and oil breather hose
breather hose may be missing because it was burning oil i.e. too much oil vapour coming out of crankcase and failed emissions test or perhaps too much mayo from leaking lower barrel seals or short runs in winter, venting the crankcase to air can solve a lot of issues, mine are vented to air for the mayo issue but I blocked off the pancake.

Re: Missing dalek cap outlet and oil breather hose
Cheers and thanks for the responses. Yes the inline fuel filter is definitely coming out as is all the old fuel pipe.
Regarding the oil breather tower to air inlet pipe, I'm inclined to get him one but maybe blank off the inlet for now to stop it pulling in unfiltered air, but not fit the pipe now in case there was a reason it got disconnected. I don't want to inadvertently cause an issue with him about to cross the continent!
But he'll have the spare on the van in case he or a garage he meets wants to fit it later on.
Itchy how did you block off the air inlet? I'm thinking some kind of tough plastic and a few cable ties?

I used an old temperture sensor in a short piece of 19mm pipe and a jubilee clip, perfect fit, but you could also fit the pipe you buy with an old sensor or something similar in the end.

What could possibly go wrong? hope he has breakdown cover and a wad of cash, nobody will recover you if it can be repaired locally and you have to pay for the repair.

Based on my experiences with them, I reckon that lovely gold topped Chinese fuel pump will last about 150 miles.....

Wow, sitting over the engine, on the pressure side of the pump, with no hose clips, just before a trip to sunny Spain.
I reckon this is an engine fire narrowly avoided.

Re: Missing dalek cap outlet and oil breather hose
Yes I'm glad he asked me to come over to look at it. He's only had it a week so I think this was a timely intervention.
I have just ordered a new breather pipe, fuel lines, clips, service filters, plugs, coolant hose, dalek cap and fuel pump push rod and fuel pump from Brickwerks. I've gone with the same style pump as I don't want to commit myself to changing the pump right now (I have to do all work with a four year old boy in a neck collar, who's supposed not to be running and jumping around for six weeks....) But I wanted him to carry the spare on the van that he or a mechnic could easily change, and the fuel lines will be in the correct position for etc.
I also noticed that the distributor seems to be newish but without the vac advance? Is this likely to be because the PO wanted/needed to replace the distributor, but it's not easy/possible to get new T3 distributors now (Bosch ceased production)?

Re: Missing dalek cap outlet and oil breather hose
with no vac advance that is going to run rough, too lean at revs .
no doubt its a 009 which do not suit these engines....
hope he got this van cheap ....
how about a full engine bay picture , what else has been bodged???

yes it's needed or perhaps a few pics.
looks like tinware missing also, clip missing from rubber air filter hose to pancake.
will need a new fan belt and worth checking the water pump pulley for play while changing it
