Thanks for all the help and suggestions on this, particularly the suggestion to get a picture up. That made me take the obvious (in hindsight !) step of comparing mine with a picture of a "good" setup (and also with the diagrams in Bentley).

I found that the garage had done at least three things that didn't match the "correct" setup, and by the looks of things so far, I now have a working handbrake that doesn't overheat.
Can you spot the three "incorrect things" in these pic ? (both sides were the same)

Go back with some pictures and ask for your money back on the job, all of it to compensate for the inconvenience, your time , potentially dangerous brakes and possible damage, say you will accept it 'without pregudice'

You owe it to the next person who uses that incompetent mechanic to give them that feedback so they can be more careful in future and loss of money makes them think.

If you only did a short journey you probably got away with it but easy to boil the brake fluid then it needs changing.

Time and time again I say to people post a picture, it really works where words don't :ok

This is why I always do the work myself - it is nigh on impossible to find someone that will do the job right and when you do you have to get on the end of a long queue at the trusted ones.

Incidentally, do we know why the long fork on the adjuster needs to be at the back ?

It is stepped so it doesn't slide off the shoe.
Can't see a split pin on the hub nut as well.

Not on a phone screen. Not very shiny if it is new.

Ah, in that case, could it be that the adjusters were fitted in the right place (horizontal), but because the longer prong was not to the back, they were able to slide into the wrong position ?

This a bay crossbar but they are the same shoes and principle, if the bar is the wrong way round the handbrake lever works on the shorter step on the crossbar which means adjustment has to be a lot slacker and yes the bar can slip out of the slot in the shoe.

Have a look in the wiki at the pictures at the end of the page here: http://wiki.club8090.co.uk/index.php/Br ... _servicing

Is the link not working for anyone else? Having issues and could do with a guide
