Non t25 but VW late bay engine

Post by lefty67 »

Having trouble removing petrol tank from mate's 1979 late bay.
It's a 2.0l cj engine, v. Similar to cu.
Is it possible to lower the engine by 2 inches without removing it from the gearbox and drive shafts?
Cheers all

No, the gearbox has mountings at the top as well as the front.

if it still has the top mount bolts on the gearbox you can remove them and drop the engine and box without removing the driveshafts, what problem are you having, ive pulled a few tanks and not needed to lower the engine just pull the carbs

Thanks for the replies Bigherb and davidoft1, but thought as much.
I've taken the carbs, air box and fan off but cant get the tank past the casing where the belt is, it's about 2ins too high to get tank over it.

Move the tank to the side a bit and tease it out, it should fit , though undoing just the rear engine mount will give a little more wiggle room

All sorted, cheers for the help davidoft1 and big herb.
Lowered the engine and gearbox in the end, still a pain but doable. Think I would remove engine next time.
The two bolts which support the bellhousing were missing which threw us s bit.
Do you know what size these should be?
Many thanks

Do you mean the bolts that hold the bell housing to the gearbox mounting carrier? Then M10 x 75mm

Cheers bigherb. They're the ones. Is it best to take the starter motor off first?

Yes, makes it easier to get the nuts on.
