Exhaust gas analyser

Post by scotttie »

Sorry if I'm not posting this in the right place, but I want to buy a gas analyser so I can do the C02 check/adjustment on my 2.1l petrol. Has anyone got one that they'd recommend? Not sure which brand/model is best to go for.

I've just ordered one of these: Gunson G4125 Gastester Digital.
Over £200 from Gunston but half that from Amazon albeit wtg 2 - 5 weeks. Forum comments indicate that Gunston will not advise or service unless direct from them but i'll take a chance on that(Shrug emoji).

^^^^^^^^ CO tester not a CO2 tester!
I spent ages searching for a CO2 tester for heaters but couldn't find one with enough range.

I have an old Gunson 4121 Professional I bought off ebay - works well enough.

OBG - I'm curious and I think you may know, care to explain how the hotwire system calibrates in air and then stays reasonably accurate for measuring CO in the exhaust over a wide range.

I'm thinking that the electrical conductivity of the 21% oxygen in air somehow becomes a surrogate for the electrical conductivity of CO in the exhaust gases, calibrated around a 2% normalised value ????

Just got news the possible five weeks lead time has turned into 14-15 June.
Re the question of calibration: About ten years of my very wide based engineering career was spent in the manufacture of all kinds of measuring and control instrumentation. A common thread throughout was the non - linearity of response of the measuring device together with the need to compensate for the environment in which the measurement is made. In the old days these issues often needed to be dealt with by a matching non - linear meteor scale and the - in our case - temperature compensation by reference tables. The advent of digital electronics enable both these issues to be fixed with simple algorithms or programmable chips.

If you go on the Testo website they do hand held CO2/CO infra red analysers which are pretty good for a cheap gas analyser.
