Plug hole/piston probe for TDC puts the single shallow "dent" on the crankshaft pulley in line with the crankcase interface is this correct?
Is 5 degrees BTDC best for regular unleaded use?

yes the dent is tdc and the nick is the timing mark, originally 10 degrees for DJ as when new ran 4 star fuel
you can check it with a protractor, later replacement engines from VW came with a 5 degree marked pulley -
5 degrees is correct for now normal 95 ron fuel, you can run 98 ron super fuel and timing at 10 degrees for optimum performance, some do as they get better fuel economy and performance which is worth the extra cost in fuel but ymmv of course

Thanks for that gentlemen.
I guess the cause of my uncertainty is that have been unable to find specific reference to a pulley with only one timing mark.

Replacement pulleys came without the timing mark "v", as they could then be used on any (single belt) WBX and marked accordingly.

Yes we use a tool placed over the outer TDC depression to mark the correct mark on the pulley. if you don't know the provenance of your engine it could have had any pulley fitted as they are the same as air cooled engines with timing marks from 5 ATDC to 0/7.5/10 BTDCajsimmo wrote:Replacement pulleys came without the timing mark "v", as they could then be used on any (single belt) WBX and marked accordingly.
