4 speed gearbox stiff when warmed up

Post by flipsidesimon »

Hi all.
I hope you guys can help me.
Just got a lovely 1985 camper with a sticky issue. When we get up to working temperature the box no longer returns to it's 3rd/4th gate and we end up having to drive home in 2nd. Once cold all the gears are where they should be and select beautifully. I've replaced all the gear linkage bushes and adjusted the linkage to the correct place and again when it's cold all the gears are a dream.
Will be draining/changing the gearbox oil tomorrow to see if that will make any difference.
Any help or ideas will be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards
Simon

PS. Its had a swap of power plant from a 1600 diesel to a 1900 AEF unit.

Make sure you get the right oil must be GL4 not GL5 and don't over fill it.
Measure how much you drain out.

Thanks itchy,
My oil man is on the trail of the GL4. I'm hoping that the oil is low and causing my poor gear selection, so just going to fill it to the filler hole. But if anyone knows the exact amount for a 4speed box I'll put that amount in.:-)

volume is in Bentley which I don't have with me, at least measure what you put in so when you find out how much is should be you know how much to let out.

So when cold the gearbox being a 4 speed defaults to 3rd and 4th and you have to move gearstick against spring pressure to get 1st and 2nd and down under the 'gate' to get reverse ?

If it doesn't do this when hot then and you can't get it to select 3rd and 4th then I'm afraid it probably has a cracked 3rd 4th synchrohub and or one or both broken selector fork bearings for the 3rd 4th fork and or broken pivot cup for THE selector shaft and so the slot in the fork isn't aligning with the selector shaft hence you can't get into gears

As you have just bought the van chances are it was a known fault, you may well find the drain plug magnet to be clean and the oil to be fresh and or with molyslip added so it was okay for test drive purposes. Depending on how where you bought it you may be able to pursue the previous owner or vendor to get it fixed

that looks like your input shaft criclip, you might end up without drive too.
