Engine mounts problems

Post by markbradley »

My 2l CU engine and started making a knocking sound mostly when I’m 2nd, reverse and going up hills. I’m pretty sure it’s the engine mounts.

I managed to get the moustache bar off but can’t figure out how to detach the other bar above which the mounts are bolted on to. I see two bolts which I took out but it still won’t come off, anyone know how to get this bar/ engine mounts off? I’m stumped!

Cheers!

So Im told there are two bolts behind the fan housing. Do I have to remove the whole housing? Seems like a lotta effort! Any ideas much appreciated!

Have a proper look

You can see the two lower ones easily. Follow the bar towards the outside and you will see the other two, behind the cooling housing BUT not in it.

You may see the nut on the forward side of the bar before you see the bolt. I did. It took me about 10 seconds, but my CU is up in the air at the moment which does make access easier.

Let us know how you get on

Thanks! I can see them now but can’t get enough access to take them out, any tips on how to get to them?

I think we were cross purposes, you already have the engine bar off, you are actually trying to replace the engine mounts ?

I'm not sure that is possible with the cooling housing in place, the bolts will probably not wind out enough, even if you get access. You can but try with an open end spanner

Can you remove the lower cooling tins & oild cooler to see if you can get to the nuts that hold the engine mounts in place on the carrier - probably 13mm size. They're just visible on Bigherbs picture

If I can do it without removing the whole fan housing that would be great. Do you know if that’s doable?

Cheers!

I have never done / tried to do that with the engine in the vehicle, but I can't believe it's an engine out job to change engine mounts either

Bigherb knows his onions - it might only be half a dozen M10 bolts to remove the fan housing once the fan is off. It's over 30 years since I rebuilt a type 4 engine so my memory may be a bit faded :)

Have a look at this diagram.

Fan off then it looks like there are 4 bolts around the fan area, maybe a couple of others too

Thanks guys! I managed to access the 4 bolts on support bar after loosening the fan housing, so no need to take the whole thing out . Engine sitting much more level now, although still making knocking sound.

Drove back from France without any (major) issues.

Realised ots the CV joints now, new parts ordered.

Cheers!
