I have an oil leak, what is this bit called?

Post by stupot73 »

Hello dubbers, hope you are all having a fantastic bank holiday working on (or better still driving around) your VW.

I have just done an oil and filter change but I have a leak from here:

What is this called and where will I find a new seal? I can't see it listed in the Haynes book!

Many thanks in advance.

I think it’s called a tacho plate , is it leaking from the edge of from the bolts ?

From the edge. Only thing I tried so far is drive it in tighter but I don’t want to knacker it. In my infinite wisdom I took it out to clean it. I presume removal will require me to empty it of oil?

I have just drained the oil and removed offending plate. I have a hunch the seal was not seated properly so I am going to refit and try again.

They don’t need to be very tight , put the seal onto the plate and fit it to the sump, put a little oil on the O ring

Hi, yes that’s it. I drained it out, removed and refitted. The seal must have been out of place. The bolts are in a little more than finger tight and so far no leaks. Many thanks.

Heritage call it a secondary sump plate, at least on the air cooled type 4 engines - here's the bolt for them

Why do you need to know what it is called, I'm not sure they are available separately ?

E D I T: that moved on quickly, glad it's sorted

Thank you. It’s still leaking a tiny bit now I warmed it up so I might replace. Thanks again.

Get it hot and then just give the bolts a gentle tweak, make sure they are equally tight
