Early Fuel Tank Issues - Advice Required

Post by DoubleOSeven »

I've been having trouble getting the van to run. Popped some fuel directly into the carb venturi, it runs for that amount (20ml), then dies. So, checked the fuel pump rod was going up and down, it was. Treated it to one of those flash fuel pumps from Brickwerks, but no fuel being pulled up to engine bay. Got underneath it and the fuel filter is empty. Pulled the hose off the metal outlet pipe on the fuel tank, expected fuel to come rushing out...zip. There is 1/8 tank of fuel on the gauge. I did change the fuel sender 6 months ago and it's been running fine since. Why is the fuel not coming out of the outlet pipe?

Thanks in Advance.

if i remember correctly ,, the outlet pipe does not come from the bottom of the tank as it appears, it comes from the bottom of the tank in the center and rises up to the top and back down to the outlet , so you would need to suck on it to get it to run...
im sure ive seen a diagram , but i cant find it right now .

just a point , the push rod for the pump, it must be 100mm long, not 99, not 98, 100.
did you replace it , did you check it ?
try taking the pipe off the pump inlet and sucking it through from the tank, so the filter fills .

Sucked fuel up to engine bay and reconnected. Same issue, starts then dies.

I had the tank out of my CU for bodywork welding, and then had to put it back to move the van.

Same problem until I put sufficient petrol in so that the fuel filter, just after the tank outlet, was full of fuel.

It took a few carb fills to get it to run and continue running

I rigged up a temporary fuel feed to eliminate the tank, still didn’t work...then I spotted it!

Despite this being the ‘Carlos Fandango’ fuel pump (which I didn’t need to buy, albeit a nice upgrade I suppose), the inlet and outlet are not how you’d expect them to be.

Still, I’m too old to worry about embarrassing myself on this forum! :)
