Rear hub nut... thread probs
Hi all, changed rear wheel bearings last night. Job went ok but.... i cant get the new hub nut on the thread, i think the thread is gone. I can put the old one on, i tried to tighten this to get more thread out but it reaches the hub then just spins rather the push the hub back. It doesnt pull any more of the spindle out..
Has this ever happened to anyone?? Or is it my foolishness??

Re: Rear hub nut... thread probs
You are going to need to remove the hub and inspect the thread in the nut and on the spindle.
Definitely sounds as though the thread has been damaged on one or both of them. It's a bit surprising given the amount or torque that you are supposed to use to tighten the hub nut up. Is it possible that it has been over tightened at some point ?
Is the new hub nut the correct size ??

Re: Rear hub nut... thread probs
So wrong size new hub nut ? - easily solved.
You still need to inspect the threads on the old nut and hope they are damaged and the spindle is still OK

Did you buy a front ?

Re: Rear hub nut... thread probs
You need either a die to clean up the spindle 9unlikely you will have one that size) or use fine swiss files to clean up any damaged threads / burrs.
Why can't you get the new nut on, if it'sthe right size then only damaged threads could stop it. have you tried starting it the wrong way in (castle first)
Have you inspected the trads on the spindle yet ? -pictures or the area where the nut tightens would help

Terrible pselling mistekse in my last psot
Threading the hub nut backwards is almost impossible anyway, doesn't stop us trying.
When you go for the photos make sure you capture the threads on the spindle which may have failed, those where the nut is when you were trying to tighten

I think its safe to say its fubar.
Tried fro the last 2 hours to put it on no joy. Old one goes on but that gets to halfway and just spins.
Think Im going to have to put an add in wanted section.. either that or £120 for a new one

Re: Rear hub nut... thread probs
Yes should be ok, put the old nut back on and something like a masonry nail through the hole where the split pin goes, that wont shear off being case hardened. Good luck.

Re: Rear hub nut... thread probs
finally did this.
Thanks david for the stub axel.horrible job, on my back tightening cv joints and all. One slight problem now, after putting it all back together. My brake pedal travels a lot more before slowing down. I didnt clamp brake lines and the adjuster on the brake drum came off. Returned everything as it was. Will buy a bleeding kit from halfords tomorrow to see if that helps matters
