Engine juddering

Post by Ralfie »

Hi. On our way home today after sitting at about 55-60mph for 30miles we came to a round about and when slowing down and dropping the gears the van started to judder(kangaroo). When pulling away it did it again. Higher up the Rev range it didn’t do it so just carried on driving. Then at 60mph it did it, so I dipped the clutch and reved the engine to about 4500rpm, let the clutch out and it was fine. It did it again about 15 minutes later so i did it again and was ok. The engine is a 1990 2.1 dj. It ticks over spot on and when I rev it when not in gear it’s spot on. Can anyone shed any light on this?
Thanks

Air of Fuel related, not electrical. Check your vacuum hoses. I’d change the fuel filter too, then report back.

If it's engine related then usual suspects are AFM having wear in the tracks causing a dead spot which then means ECU gets an erroneous signal so fluffs the fuelling or a poor electrical contact from temp sensors or Hall signal, or TCi unit poor earth or failing or HT lead breaking down or injector issue, so many things can cause issues with engine smoothness. Was it raining when the problems became evident ? If so then moisture and electrics may be an issue.

It has had new vacuum lines where necessary, new fuel lines, new fuel filter, new coolant hoses. All these were don’t at coast vw.
It wasn’t raining. We were on the last 40 miles home from a 500 mile weekend trip. It hadn’t skipped a beat until then.

First time it kangarood whilst slowing down for a r'bout? On the overrun, not under power? If so, it's most likely not the engine at all, but drivetrain - maybe a CV joint? Just a thought...

Just took it out for a 25m test run and nothing wrong. No judder on run down, low range cruising, high end cruising and set off. Should I take it to a garage to get checked or just keep driving it?
I’m not mechanically minded but I’m guessing I need to start as this is the start of my t25 syncro journey!

Time to start learning. You’ll be pretty good at it in no time. Don’t take it to the garage each time. Plenty of highly experienced guys & gals on here to help. Sense of achievement for the win.

You say 'where necessary'. I assume one or other have been changed but not all. Perished hose can cause your problem, even when it looks ok. I suggest that you buy al length of vacuum hose, cut it to size and replace all of them. The hose is cheap, so if this still doesn't sort the problem, you're not out of pocket. However, it might work and then you can smile again.
