Sorry for the numpty question, Paul. Please explain this? Gear ring is -5. Why suggest -6? Perhaps to do with wear or 'lash'.....whatever that means.
If l replace camshaft gear ring like for like, will it mesh with crank ring without issue?
Thanks
Stuart

No silly questions

-5 ring and -6 are very similar , if you need -5 then a zero will be too big, you can live with a bit of lash ( play between gears) but you can't live with the gears being tight, but it maybe that this crank gear was damaged before and somebody fitted a -5 to compensate.

Try and measure the lash and swap the crank and try and measure the lash with the other crank gear, feeler gauges rotate and check in a number of positions

pull that cam out bearings should be double thrust that may be some of the debris? looks like the edge is missing?

ignore that early case, early case, early case.

I'm used to late cases early it seems have single thrust

itchyfeet wrote:ideally take con rods off the other crank too but make sure everything is marked as to where it came from, you have a real mix of con rods there probably repaired before with odd bits. the other crank may have all non stretch bolts. You can't reuse stretch bolts with long threads.

those bits could be left over from a previous repair

Got it ...deep or long thread are stretch bolts.

I believe the markings on the heads of the two types of con rod bolts are different. Can you maybe do a photo of numbers 1and 4 side by side so the difference can be seen and others can know what is fitted without further disassembly ?

Why didn't you fit that Chinese cam yourself Andrew?
Because I build the best engines I can with the best parts I can source for people who choose to pay a bit more for the peace of mind that this provides. Hopefully we're a long way from a time when this is the best quality I can find! I'll retire before then.
I did consider putting it into a parts bin DG to use as a donkey/loan engine, but when I came to fitting the cam, I swerved over to my stash of DG regrinds instead.

Conrods: How about taking them all off, and weighing them to find the nearest to a matched set of four. Any with stretch bolts, replace with these https://www.coolairvw.co.uk/Item/Shop_b ... _Bolt.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Or swap non-stretch out of other rods to save money.

You can't just use and cam, you won't know what cam will work without knowing the size you need, as I see it your crank has a knackerd gear so needs swapping and that can affect lash, I think you need to do some measuring as I said.

Cheers Paul,

Sorry for neglecting this post. Yes. Yet mostly no....if you understand my meaning. But unfortunately not for the appropriate reasons.

Maxine's Mother passed away end of February after a long period of illness. So have spent most of my time sixty miles from home.
Funeral has passed and probate paperwork/ house clearance pending. So likely get back to this soon.

I will start a new post with a link to this one shortly.
