Auto box

Post by kentishvanman »

Hi,
1987, DG, Auto box.
I have ATF leaking out from around the govenor cover. Anyone replaced the seal?
Am I right in assuming that cleaning the area, remove the w clip and cover, replace the seal and put back the cover etc is all that is required? The governor does not 'shoot' out does it? Also will the box need draining?
Thanks

hi

if it is leaking from governor cover

had to destroy my cover to get it off (New from Brickwerks)

A little atf will dribble out no need to drain.

it's usually the 2nd gear brake band piston cover leaking forward and below the governor but you might be lucky and it actually be the gov cover as the brake band cover is a pan off
and valve block remove and refit to do properly (Mine was)
Regards
Rick

The only way i nailed my leak was to fit a go pro video camera pointing at approx leak area and go for a drive
Nothing leaked when running in neutral or park
Video from Go Pro showed leak in second gear only from brake band cover

I topped it up for seven months but got sick of oily tailgate ;)

There are posts on the internet saying that the 2nd gear brake band seal seal can be changed with the box still attached. That's what Harry Harpics tried to do on mine and totally effed up my gearbox. If it's not leaking too much just leave it

I did mine with box still in
Removed oil pan and valve block
Turned adjuster out as far as i could
Used C shaped mole grips to compress piston spring and removed large circlip.

Used same grips to compress again after replacing piston seals and the 2 o rings that leaked

Worked fine but no way would i chance not dropping the pan and valve block as it was not easy getting the piston pin into the brakeband correctly without

If pin misses correct position in brakeband youll wreck the box in a short drive
