White/blue smoke on start-up - 1.6 turbo diesel

Post by ianvfr750 »

My 1990 T25 1.6 turbo diesel camper has been emitting clouds of predominantly white/blueish smoke on cold start-up - this has got increasingly worse over the last 6 months. The smoke disappears once the van has run for a few minutes and there is no smoke once the engine has warmed up. The van does not appear to use oil or certainly not excessive amounts for a 28 year old engine.
Does anyone have any ideas to the possible cause and what would be required to rectify .

Thanks for any suggestions / help.
Ian.

Hi,my guess is that the injection pump timing needs to be advanced...try starting the engine with the cold start lever pulled out ( pull the cold start lever out as you start the engine)
Good luck.

Failing glow plugs can also be the cause, getting worse as they die one by one. I would have thought that this were more likely as timing doesn't change of it's own volition normally.

No idea about oil burners but this has been around a while and seems well respected....

This was an ongoing problem with my 1.6 JX for many years. Plenty of so called (highly paid) experts had a go at resolving the problem. The root cause came to light when I had an engine replace / rebuild (MV Engendering). It turned out to be excessive wear/play on the cam belt pulley on the crankshaft giving an estimated + /- of about 4°. It was explained that no one setting it could do so as they were blind to the internals.

The "said" pulley complete with very worn woodruff key is now a very expensive paperweight.

I hope this adds to your options. Regards, Max.
