Yes you can
Ideally brass
Stainless would be ok.

Just out of interest, but why are brass screws best?

Just to update.

Managed to get the damaged screw out with no damage to the thread of the flap spindle.

Going to see if I can re cut the thread of the screw rather than cut down a new one.

Still stuck on the choke flap screws!!

I had thought that the me crossing the thread the last time hadn't resulted in any damage to the spindle holes. However, in one of the spindle holes the new screws just won't tighten up, they just spin.

I've got some M4 sized screws and tap but it doesn't look like the spindle is big enough, any suggestions most welcome.

If you are not going to be needing to remove it often I would rivet with a copper rivet if you have enough confidence dealing with delicate parts. You won't have enough meat to tap a new thread in the current hole - you can buy small taps cheap enough on ebay if you make a new hole. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hot-Mini-HSS ... ctupt=true

Cheers for the rivet suggestion as it worked a treat.

Got the carb back together and back on the van and two things,

It won't start! With the carb being completely drained of fuel I know that it will take some time cranking but before firing but it just won't. I've even tried Easy Start and it won't fire.

Any pointers?

Cheers,

I thought that as the van was running fine previously that I could safely assume the sparks and timing was OK?

It was difficult to start when cold, but it looks like the choke wasn't operating correctly.

Also would not running on Easy Start mean tipping petrol directly in the carb still needed?

Ah ok.
Choke position depends on ambient temperature.
Cold fast idle is also dependent on this
I'll Assume you set the cold start mechanism by depressing the accelerator before cranking.
That the airbox is attached.
The carb is primed with fuel.
There's a healthy spark
Without touching the accelerator the engine should start.
If it doesn't remove the duct
Tip in the fuel open the throttle fully and turn the key

Before I took the carb off, when the engine was cold it would be a pig to start, but would start. Amongst other things, it turned out that the choke pull down unit and the choke plate linkage that Kev kindly supplied were broken. Does this mean that previously the choke wasn't coming on at all?

What's really confusing me is, now, regardless of whether the choke is correctly set up, shouldn't the van still start as it did before?

The van has been off the road for 5 weeks now so unless something else has coincidentally broken in the meantime?
