Vacuum Leak

Post by jswagger »

Hi,

I have a 1.9DG, auto, Caravelle.

I now appear to have a vacuum leak after changing a broken choke pull down unit.

The vacuum pipes from the carb to distributor. and, carb to air filter looked OK, but have been changed anyway. Same with pipe from carb to Vacuum unit
Any other things to suggest?

Thanks for all your help.

Do you mean the pipe in the link below? If yes, then it hasn't been replaced so will be next on the list.

Thanks,

Is the distributor diaphragm contained in the below link?

Also, is the secondary throttle diaphragm in the carb itself??

Thanks again.

The link shows the secondary throttle vacuum unit and the diaphragm is inside.
The distributor has a separate vacuum unit.

Thanks,

I had actually meant to post that link for distributor diaphragm rather than the secondary throttle diaphragm, sorry for the confusion. At least I was part correct?

Is the below what's needed for the distributor diaphragm?
https://www.brickwerks.co.uk/distributo ... vance.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Is there any way of testing the vacuum unit or distributor diaphragm that's already on the vehicle? Like you can test the choke pull down unit by sucking and if it moves it's working.

Hi, jswagger,

This is the distributor vacuum unit

https://simonbbc.com/bosch-svda-bosch-vacuum-unit/

and you can test it on the van by sucking on it the same as the choke pull down, hold with the tip of your tongue and watch the timing plate in the distributor, it should move and stay put until you release the vacuum...It's easier to do with the distributor off the van...just done mine. I could get a tune out of the old one :( !!!

Did mine last year too. Bought the Powerspark one^^^^^^^^easy to replace in situ and made a world of diference to the running of the camper.

Hi,

I've sucked on the secondary throttle diaphragm and the rod is moving so looks like it's working. The unit is also holding vacuum.

The distributor is not holding vacuum so looks like there is a leak? I've not changed it in the 15 years I've had the van so perhaps overdue
Thanks for the heads up on the Powerspark link, I've ordered one.

That's pretty conclusive, yes.

Whilst I'm waiting for the distributor part to arrive, I need to get the choke working, and also adjust the change the choke plate gap.

Do you need the choke cover back on and bimetal spring in place?
