You should get it tight enough with that, but your 1/2 breaker won’t be strong enough to undo it. Must look at the torque multiplier, don’t understand how that works...crazyhorse wrote:RogerT wrote:I use a 3/4 inch drive socket, with a slider bar

rather than a breaker bar. Then a scaffold pole over the bar. I did try with a 1/2 drive socket, but the breaker bar just bent. You really do need 3/4” as it’s a sight more than 500 Nm to undo it after it’s been on for a while.
Balls, in my impatience I orderd this

Have to go to Manchester on Wednesday, and I wont get a chance to fit it now. 50mph all the way for me

Ahh, same principle as the guts of a Sturmey Archer 3 speed!

Re: Drone Drone Drone
Finished this today..
Started yesterday but had to postpone as i didnt have any circlips. Went to Halfords this morning. Everything back together, tightend nut using some maths. My 1/2 breaker bar with adaptor held up strong.
Problem now is there is still some noise. Think I will have a go at the CV joints or least see if they need tightening.

Re: Drone Drone Drone
Hi guys,
just been on a longish journey down the m4, doing around 60, the sound us still there the is a bit of a wobble in the steering wheel:twisted:
I changed the offside rear bearing as it was an advisory, the garage changed the nearside for MOT, but not pointing any fingers, the drone noise only started after getting van back.
Any ideas, or should I check to see if there is any play??
Im 80% confident i put the rear hub on properly.

Re: Drone Drone Drone
Any chance it's tyre noise?
Did you have any tyres replaced at your MOT that might not have been balanced properly? Unbalanced tyres can be a source of noise over about 50mph.

Well well...
Took to a tyre place today. They said the tracking wouldn't cause the drone and vibration. Took it and put it on the ramps... then told me the problem was transmission issues and needed someone with the knowledge to repair this.
Where now?? Didnt think I had transmission probs...

My daughter had a similar noise on her Golf. I thought it was wheel bearing, but her garage checked the bearing and said it must be tyre noise. I was sceptical, but the tyre has now been changed and the noise is gone. The noise developed gradually on an existing tyre.

Re: Drone Drone Drone
cheers Colin, will check it out...
Starting to get a bit worried now that its getting to be something more than hub bearings.
Arent random road noises the worse, the problem is also if I take it to a garage I start describing noise and just feel like a right bloody wierdo (esp when they cant hear anything)

Re: Drone Drone Drone
Happy new year all.
To close thread...
The drone noise seemed to go when turning a right corner and more when turning a left..
I investigated the hub nut on the nearside rear...the side the garage replaced.
Took pin out and would you believe it...I could undo nut with my hand. Got my standing position on my breaker bar and tightned up the nut, pin back in. NO MORE DRONE.
The ultimate optimist in me thinks it might be a good year, though Im pretty miffed with garage
