Hi,
My temp gauge needle always sits just below the normal mark. Heater on or off.
However on last journey I drove 100 miles (A road) = as normal.
Stopped for 4/5 hours.
Drove 50 miles (A road + motorway) = as normal.
Stopped for 1 hour.
Drove 35 miles (Motorway) = needle now sitting above the normal mark.???????
Water level same as it was when checked 400/500 miles ago.
Could this be the start of a problem?

Re: Water temp.
When was the last time you had a coolant flush out?
Mine used to sit in that sector of the gauge, tho since had pipes replaced & flushed out etc, the needle mark always sits below centre (unless a very hot day or going up a large hill).

Re: Water temp.
When I bought my first car (Morris Traveller) I said to the bloke I bought it off that I was going to fit oil pressure and water temperature gauges to the car. He told me not to as they were "Worry Meters".
I don't know where I am, but I'm having a lovely time!

Lol, funny that!
To OP, in the VW handbook I gather for a temp gauge anything from say 11 o' clock to 1 o clock roughly is normal and if your fans are working correctly they should kick in anyway to bring the temperature down.

Re: Water temp.
The sender resistance decreases with temperature. High resistance in a connection will result in gauge reading lower than it should.
