Air compressor

Post by itchyfeet »

I want a small one to try my hand at spraying and shot blasting
Wondering if anybody know if there is much difference between these brands, they look almost identical and I wondering if it's worth the extra money for the more expensive one???

Only difference I can see is Clarke is 1.8KW and SGS is 1.5KW

£120

£180

any comments gratefully received.

I have no experience of the two models you listed but I have the 2.5HP - 9.6CFM SGS compressor which I bought second hand. In terms of build quality the SGS is good and I use it for just about everything that a compressor can be used for.

Not a comment on those two machines, but spraying and particularly shot blasting need large amounts of air. That means you ideally want a high a CFM measure as possible. High CFM compressors are generally rather more expensive...

Machine Mart often do VAT Free Weekends - that would make the price comparable.
There is a large compressor in our shed if you wanted to give spraying etc a go - feel free.

Thanks Mark but if it's not in my shed I will never get around to it.

I bought one of these but with a 50 litre tank for £169. It easily runs my air saw, sanders, chisel and impact gun using an 8 mm airline which all require a relatively high air supply. It copes well for a low end compressor but you do notice a little drop in pressure when running it constantly which would cause an issue if spraying. This would be the same for any brand with the same spec.

If I was to buy again with shot blasting and spray painting then I would look at one of these as they provide an indirect drive with 14.5cfm and 145 psi.

For spraying read up on high volume low pressure spray guns. I have no experience with them but they seem to be the way forward if using smaller compressors.

They'll be useless at blasting. Boatbuilder had great results at spraying with a cheap gun, have a look at his thread.
Why would the glass be anything other than half full?

I recently bought the GTair 3hp compressor, runs my media blaster no problem, but it is working hard. Turning itself back on every couple of minutes to maintain the air pressure.
After reading a few reviews, people were recommending 5hp for media blasting.

Runs my air wrench no problem though :ok

I have a 3HP compressor too, Sealey twin cylinder - maximum size you can run on a domestic single phase supply.
