Hello,
Anyone know of a garage in Falkirk / West Lothian area who would have some experience with gear linkages. No matter how many hours (many so far) I spend at it I cannot get 4th or 5th. Been through every post, including my own when I first put the linkage together, turned front rod, back rod, checked boots, forks, hand selecting gears at box, setting in 1st, setting in 5th etc etc and I'm suck with reverse, 1st, 2nd and 3rd only. Tried setting up as per Haynes / Bentley. Been lucky so far not having to use a garage other than MOT but now just wasting time. Garage who did MOT said they'd just be trying to figure it out same as me.
Cheers for any suggestions.

So you have gone from a 4 speed gearbox to a 5 speed?

Sorry, can't resist any longer now, I stopped myself earlier this afternoon but can restrain myself no longer: OP needs to change his sig to say "4 speed > 3 speed".
Not helpful I know, but it tickled me
Slightly more helpfully, don't they have a different linkage ?

Very sorry for delay, I thought I had a couple of free days then got a last minute job. I'm either going to fall asleep soon or have another look at it this afternoon.
When I got the van it was all in boxes, chap told me he had got a 5 speed box with proper rods etc, I have no reason not to believe he was right as so far everything else he said has mostly proven to be correct.
As there doesn't seem to be a garage nearby (and I'm ready for another go myself) is there any way to check the linkages to ensure I do indeed have the correct one.
As for you 937 I hope you're pleased with my new sig

Go on the 7zap.com site click vw - typ2/syncro then year 1981 and pedals then look at the top diagrams, the very early linkage is on the left and the later is far right. The 5 speed front rod is the top one.

Re: Garage in Falkirk / West Lothian Area for Gear Linkage.
Cheers for that multisi, it would appear I may have a combo of early and late. I have the angled ball housing (part 28) from the top left diagram but the gearstick from the top right diagram. Probably not helping so I'll look to standardise one way or the other. I'll need to go and at least make sure I have reverse again so I can move it off the drive to get other van out!
Thanks again for your help.

If you get stuck, you can always remove the linkage and engage reverse by hand by operating the selector manually

I think the way it's going I may be selecting all gears that way, gonna be a bit tricky on the move though!
Had another couple of hours at it this afternoon, got reverse / 1st / 2nd / 3rd again but kept loosing reverse and 1st. Need to leave it till Monday now as a bit busy tomorrow. Going to remove it all and start again, g/f roped in to help.
Bit of research tis evening to see if I need to change parts as earlier post.
Cheers.

Do you have the correct metal housing the bottom of the gear stick operates in ?
