That gouge loks too deep
there are second hand heads that come up but to answer your quesion the early heads are fine for a DG
early DGs had them the change was for DJ and DGs got them as a bonus.

Is that rust on the top of the compression ring, or a hole in the ring ?

Sorry Carrera, I should have mentioned that. That's just a splinter of timber.

Great. Thanks Paul. That makes it a lot less painful to the pocket!

Unless it's how you have cleaned the head, interesting that you can see a difference in colour of the head either side of a line from the gouge.

Really no idea on this one. Like I said I just gave it a wipe so it's not down to the clean-up. Could it be the way that the coolant flowed in towards a valve?

I would have though you could get that tigged up and machined to the correct dimension. A lot cheaper than a pair of heads.
Yeah, but it's really quite deep and as I don't know anyone with mates rates, tigging and machining could add up to the price of a new head. I had a look at the o-ring on the other head and one of the pits near the coolant channel overlaps the o-ring groove. All things considered with the £186 per head being a good option and for longevity and peace of mind I think 2 new heads is the way I will go.

I was thinking that the colouration was caused by the coolant staining before it gets converted to steam and goes out of the exhaust.

On the heads, that's entirely your call, we generally don't know what someones budget or access to trades / mates is like. If you are going to the trouble of new heads, then I would also go for new valves / springs as well. Not worth spoiling the ship for a ha'porth of tar.

Thanks Carrera, will do. Only one £186 head available on BW  Do they tend to restock quickly?

that may be it, I think these are NOS heads so there is a limit to supply.

Just looked on Classic parts website, it seems that's the end of them (under part number 025101355).
I just used a pair, and only have one pair left. :-(
AMC it is then.

Thanks guys. Brickwerks emailed me back and confirmed that it was their last one. They say they bought 60 from VW last year and that VW don't have any more! How much do you want for one of yours ajsimmo? Surely one spare head is more than enough for even the most dedicated enthusiast :D Good move on picking up a couple of spares!

I've ordered the last BW head along with new valves, rings, a full gasket set and a coolant pump. I'll see how the existing heads clean up and either buy a new (AMC?) one or use the best of the two I have. I assume the head designs are the same for both sides? I've a valve spring removal tool and some JB Weld on order and I have plenty of clean-up work to keep me busy whilst I await my BW delivery...

Thanks again for all the help.
