I took my engine and gearbox out today and noticed this (on the gearbox):

Pretty sure something should slot in here?

I'm assuming it is good to have them?? To stop dirt, water etc. getting in?

Is this where you fill the gearbox with oil?

not massively necessary, it's where you peer in to see the timing marks on the flywheel
1981 Vanagon Westy Burning oil as fuel...

Nooo. Don't go putting oil in there :) That is your timing mark hole.
