More progress on van dismantling today :D

Disconnected all the electrics, brake servo hose (didn't break the plastic nossle :D), throttle and fuel line. Only thing left is the choke cable, seems really fiddly to get too and not sure if i need to mark it for reference anywhere?

So it looks like i'm almost ready to drop the engine and gearbox, any advice on what bolts and what order i should undo everything on a diesel?

Undid this bolt on the mechanical pump(?) and managed to lose the gold/brass washer, anyone know what size washer this is? Brickwerks link would be great 8) Also, is this a bleed/overflow pipe for fuel??

More progress, air box is off and 11 out of the 12 CV bolts were successfully removed using plus gas :D :(

I lost the thread on this barsteward:

Ask him to get my ball joint apart as well. One popped off easily but the other has resisted swearing, plus-gas, heat and one broken splitter, one almost broken - bolt bent splitter and an old fashioned belt it one.

A few options

Clean the rust off at the base of the bolt head, more plus gas then

Mole grips on the head and try to rotate
Cut a groove in the head and use a hammer & chisel to try and loosen it
File / grind a couple of flats so the mole grips can grip better
Grind/ cut the head off completely, remove the CV to expose the bolt shank which will now unscrew pretty easily

These are increasing order of aggression  Good luck :D

I'd say a set of these has to be somewhere near the top of that list.

I bought a much cheaper set, made by Laser - the Laser 4016 kit - but I'm struggling to find them online at the moment. But this type of tool can be a real life saver. They have a reverse thread so that the harder you try to undo the bolt the more they bite onto it.

Many of the sets I can find online seem to have a hex socket shape, but I think you're going to need one of the 'slimline' types shown above due to the restricted space around the CV joint.

He came round with a hammer and chisel.....basically got nowhere and made the bolt even worse

I like this suggestion CJH, it looks as though these try to loosen the bolt from the outer part of the bolt heads, are they suitable for allen style bolts?

Yes, they are designed to grip the outside of a rounded bolt or nut. They'll work with a round head bolt too, but might need a bit of a tap to get them to grip initially. I've used mine successfully a few times. Even managed to get some locking wheel nuts off with a bigger version when I lost the key. If you can afford the expense and the wait, you should start with a set of these in my opinion.

Success on mine, loads of heat, plus-gas, splitter cranked up as hard as I could get it then beat the s**t out of it with a 7lb lump hammer. Satisfying ping.

CJH is a legend everyone.

Got a nut extractor kit similar to the one CJH recommended this morning:

Got 3 bolts off in 15 mins! Inlet manifold bolts only took 5 mins, CV bolt (on the right )took 10 mins because of the awkward angle:

Got my Inlet Manifold off :D

Almost there now!

Alright, so what is this beast called what's the best way to remove it?
Image

My best guess is that it has something to do with the brake fluid line?

I tried removing the bolt connected to the green line, but the thread has gone and it just seems to slip? I tried the bolts holding the main unit down, but similar problems there.
The only other options i can see are the 2 big bolts connecting it to the engine here:

Top left:

Bottom right:

It looks as though there is more keeping it connected to the engine than these bolts though?

Cheers!

Cheers jas915, now i know what to search for on the forum :D

Have you removed one of these before? After a quick search, it looks like the two bolts holding it on may need to be cut off?
