So as far as I can see... Coming out of the box are 3 sets of cables. The left goes to the number plate lights. The middle splits one part to the water header tank sensor the other to the thermostat housing and top water (temp?) and currently the oilsensor. The right hand side goes to the light clusters. So ignoring left and right I'm focusing on the middle and ignoring the water header tank. So in the remaining set of wires pictured in the next post I have black, black and blue, purple and black and yellow and red.
Ignoring yellow and red cos it goes to thermostat housing I'm left with the others!Image

Here's the other part of the loom that comes from the middle of the box and the one in my fingers is what was to the oil sensor.Image

I've hooked up the blue and black and with the ignition on there is no light. I've just got another torch!!!! I can now see the blue black wire does not go to the relay but as your description said it goes to the 7 pin connector.

It's a simple connection from the black / blue wire to the oil pressure switch that you need.

If necessary disconnect the two halfs of the 7 pin connector to confirm the black blue wire you are talking about is in pin 1 and follow the loom and sub looms until that black / blue emerges.

You might need to open up that plastic spiral cable guide..... that doesn't look standard and it might be hiding in there.

Great thanks, will have a go in the morning as it's raining here now.
My mind is thinking that as it was fine before, the black and blue wire that emerges next to the black that was connected, must have been swapped. I was hoping that by putting it on it would be fine but I guess it's never that simple! I've got a multimeter now so might try and follow some of the previous posts and check the circuit out.

Will also look into the non standard spiral and see what's lurking!

Woo hoo! All resolved! Turns out the contact in the 7 pin connector needed cleaning and the 2 other switches were faulty. So put the 3rd new switch in today and all works a treat! Thanks so much for all the support and info, wouldn't have got there without it!

Excellent :ok

Now, you need to find out what that black wire should be doing.

Can you use the meter to trace where it is connected to in the junction box (or wherever). Should be reasonably easy as it's a thicker wire than most so easier to spot :?:

It looks as though it's for the water temp sender at the top and it goes back to the relay. Is this part of the inlet manifold heater system?

I was expecting it to end up somewhere on the carb, the thick wire indicates it carries more current than a simple sender wire so likely part of the cold running system .

As there are a number of potential connections on the carbn that's why I was asking where it went in the junction box. We should be able to identify it from the connection location.

I don't have a Pierburg carb on mine so don't know what you should have in place as standard. A picture of your carb with electrical connections visible might allow someone else to immediately identify it.

Have another wiring diagram - late DG,but should be OK for the carb

My suspicion is that it's for N52 or N1 - you'll see what I mean on page 4 of the wiring diagram

Did you ever find out what the black wire was for ?

Hey there,

Sorry for taking so long to reply, it's been a bit hectic and have been trying to sort a new car out as the wife's got driven into and written off!.. I did find out what the wire was for, looking g at those links was really useful and I figured out it was for the cut off labled 8 in the image. I realised someone else had not seen the image you sent! and had linked in another live to go to it and must have guessed the left over went to the oil light.

Not gonna try and understand how or why but just really glad to have the help to put it right!
Thanks again for all the info!

Glad you got it sorted (wifes car too)

I'm struggling to understand how that wiring caused the oil light behaviour you reported, but hey, never mind it's all working correctly now
