Getting a good seal - exhaust manifold to head

Post by ash1293 »

All these little jobs are turning into bigger ones.

Was pottering on today and had noticed a bit of a chuff from exhaust manifold at cylinder 3 and a tiny hole on the bottom of the silencer.
Silencer should seal with some putty or a spot of weld so no big issue.

End of last year it had new steel manifold pipes and elring gaskets so I thought i'd just nip under and make sure studs were tight............ snap. Luckily there was enough left to manage work the remaining portion out.

Anyway - going to have to get a new stud and refit but is there any tips for getting a good seal to cylinder head?

when fitting an exhaust to a wbx you need to assemble loose the tighten heads before cast knuckle.

Would you add a smear of sealant or just gasket alone?

Sealant won't hurt but it rarely lasts long. Had to use double gaskets a couple of times in the past though
