1.9 main seal burst?

Post by ToolkiT73 »

My 1.9 wasserboxer used to have a small leak (a few drups here and there so didnt bother me too much), but on our way home this summer holiday it had a sudden loss of all oil. Leaking between the engine and the gearbox...
In the end we got home on the back of a recovery truck..

From doing some investigation, the likely candidate for the cause would be the main oil seal..
Are there any other options that could cause the symptoms?

Only way to be sure is to take the geabox off and have a look off course.

My options are to:
A) take it to a local garage
B) See if a friend with a workplace is willing to help out
C) sign up for Edd China's new program..

How much labour would removing the gearbox be? trying to get a ballpark of what option A would cost..

could be camshaft plug also

gearbox on a ramp should come off in an hour unless there are problems like previously shagged bolts
