Wheel bearing help, My brain has disolved!
Need brains for rear wheel bearing issue.
I got an advisory on one rear wheel bearing having excessive play. Didn't have to do it for the mot test but thought what the hell, get it done while overhauling the brakes.
Re test tomorrow, test up next week and holiday Friday so have to sort quick.
Replaced the bearings in the usual fashion as I've done loads of times before. Torqued up ( 12 stone of me, at three feet of scaffold bar). Test drive and it's making a horrible scraping sound ( drum on back plate) with any amount of left turn. i stopped twice and re-tightened hub nut more (4 feet). Got home and jacked it up again and there's tons of play, and no amount of tightening will sort it.
I can see movement between inner and outer race of the outer bearing but no more than the old one. I'll strip it back down in the morning but any advice would be welcome.
Oh yeah carrier checked for being oval and was within a few hundredth of a mill as far as my equipment ( vernier) can tell, and play is right round the clock.
I just can't think why it could be worse with fresh bearings.

What brand bearing have you fitted?
Nowadays only FAG bearing sets have the correct sized INA outers. The others are loose by factory

Did you use bearing seal to help lock it in place?
Had a similar ossue when doing mine. One with wear disappeared, one with only minor play still had minor play

Should have shopped at Brickwerks!!! I get most bits from them for a reason. Meyle have always seemed "ok" but this amount of play is ridiculous. Hence why I suspect another (additional?) Issue.
I'd shelve it till we get back from holiday but the water pump has failed on our audi and it's a pig to replace.
I've never tried bearing seal, how do use it? Pre the grease I'd imagine?

Bearing seal goes on the outer race, think of it as thread lock for the hub, marginal effect but can help

It's in the shopping basket! Brickwerks are quite close, but got nothing to drive there in.
Re: Wheel bearing help, My brain has disolved!
Is there a possibility the inner sleeve between the bearings was missed out accidentally? This would mean you are torquing up against the bearing and not against the solid central section.

Yes! Just buy the best quality bearing from Brickwerks and use bearing seal. The housings do wear, and there is a limit to how sloppy they can get and still be usable though.
I will no doubt still get the advisory on the MOT at some point, but that is so common that I’d choose to judge for myself if it needed changing.
