Intermittent starter issue

Post by slobbo »

Hi guys. Been a while. Been busy with life. The vans had a mass of upgrades recently including fresh batteries which I had hoped would help solve an intermittent problem. It hasn't. Basically ever now and again the van won't turn over. I have replaced the starter, cleaned every earth point I could find and added an extra earth strap on the gearbox. You get a click but thats it. If I do it a few times it will start but it is bloody annoying. Any ideas?
Cheers
Rob.

Tried a couple. Being the 2.1 starter turning over a vr6 could be that the little fella struggles. Problem I have is the space doesn't allow for a bigger one. I know Jed does a high torque one but its pricey and not sure if it will fit. Might have to bight the bullet.

Had the same with mine, turned out to be a dodgy ignition switch. I added a push button starter and now it starts every time. Occasionally I'll try the key and when it doesn't work the button gets it going!

Might be worth giving them a bell.

Mine was the bush gismo which goes on with the terminal lug which looked clean as a whistle but got cured with a good seeing to with emery. I only found it by laying under the van while my mate operated the starter while I held the probes of a multi meter one on the stud and the other on the lug. Any significant voltage across here or anywhere for that matter will be a problem. if you identify all the connections between the battery and the starter including the earth loop and check them out in this way you will see whether the volt drop is occurring in the starter, the wiring, the earthing or often likely - the battery which unless you have exposed cell connections will just show as just that - a duff battery . You may need to cobble a long pair of leads though.
Them volts got to be going somewhere.
