Funny thing you mentioning about the other half. When I asked the wife to change the gears while I checked underneath, that was the first time she'd actually done that. We've not had the van long, well it's been in the garage for over a month, but it's been with us for just 2 weeks now, and she hasn't driven it yet. So when she was changing the gears she was like there is no way I can drive this! I'm used to it now - almost - but I can see how maybe rolling a dice would provide a more reliable gear selection at times!

I need to check the paper work, because I'm pretty sure all the gear linkage was redone about 10-15 years ago. Doesn't mean it was done right mind.

So maybe if all that loose movement around the gearstick linkage is signs of wear, I'll treat ourselves to something like this https://campervanculture.com/shop/big-s ... h-lhd-rhd/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, to bring the wife onside. If it does what it looks like in the video it should make a massive difference.

When I first got the van,(4 spd box) I kept getting 3rd instead of first when pulling away on hills, that was a nightmare as I'd stall or have to slip the clutch and rev it like mad and hold up traffic behind me.
A bit of adjustment of the plate at the bottom of the stick sorted it. :ok
Dunno if that would sort your problem but worth a try.
A good gear linkage ovehaul should sort it properly.

I was definitely hitting fifth, it's got have been that. Drove all the way home, and there's some tricky little twisty inclines, hit a happy 3rd from 4th every time. Just what I expect 3rd to be coming down from 4th.

Annoyingly easy fix, just sweeping neutral.

Cheers for all the help.
