T25 1.6 TD JX Engine EGR Valve?

Post by Nickcl »

Hi,
My first post!
Have a problem with our 1987 T25 TD losing power and stalling.
I have been advised this could be due to the EGR valve sticking open and I could blank it off or take off and block the vacuum (?) hose.
I assume this van has an EGR, but I am unsure what to look for and where it is.
(I have searched the forum)
The van will run OK for a while after I get it going. The last time I had to jump start it and after quite a few attempts it eventually started, putting out a bit of smoke.
The last time it happened, I was driving the van gently as I was low on fuel, I have been told this is not a good idea as the engines need to be driven hard to cut down the possibility of the EGR sticking.
I have used Wynns EGR Cleaner as a desperate measure! The van did 40 miles yesterday without a problem.
Any advice much appreciated.

No egr. The diesels are pretty simple. Have you changed fuel filter/checked fuel flow?

in germany there are aftermarket EGR kits to achieve EURO-2 smog regulations and lower the yearly tax

But +1 on the fuel filter.
It can pull up some debris from the tank on low levels

Thanks for the fast replies! :D
I changed the fuel filter 6723 miles ago in May 2017.
I drained the water out of the bottom and noticed quite a lot of small particles. I did run the tank onto the red line before the latest stall.
I've got a new filter, so I'll fit it and see what happens.
How do I check the fuel flow?

Removed fuel filter and dismantled housing. Found a lot of crud in the inlet jet and around the top of the filter. A lot of bits in the fuel from the filter. Cleaned it up and fitted new filter. Ran engine and rechecked filter for more crud. Clean but will monitor. Time for a fuel tank clean? I will not let the fuel level get low again!

Pull the fuel line off the tank and let some fuel drain, see if it flows freely, still a rod through to see if it’s clear , also check your rubber fuel filler neck for splits as this lets water and debris into the tank

At the moment, yes. I checked the new filter and found a bit of black slimy stuff in the inlet pipe fitting but the drain was clean, no water or bits.
I guess I’ll have to remove the tank and clean it out when I have time.
In the meantime, I’ll not let the fuel level drop too low.

Had a similar issue a little while ago, filter clogging and 'slime' in system. I bought some fuel treatment for diesel bug (plenty of info on internet) and installed an additional plastic inline filter (diesel specific) just after the tank. It's easier to see what crud is coming out and can be changed easily and cheaply. Worth replacing the fuel line from tank to filter/pump at the same time as likely this will be contaminated/dirty. All running clean now after treatment.

Do you use supermarket diesel ?

It's a side effect of the blend they use. A mate of mine works for the RAC. Never ending stream of blocked fuel filters of Fords following the extensive use of supermarket diesel.

Hi, thanks for the above advice. I’ll certainly look at fitting an inline fuel filter. Any recommendations? I have already ordered some Wynn’s Fuel Biocide and Dry Fuel, good to hear the biocide helped with you problem, muttleypup.
937carrera, we always fill with Esso Synergy Supreme as the van definitely runs better with it. I do wonder how much turnover the pump gets at £1.38 a gallon! Fuel could be less ‘fresh’?

On the odd occasion yes but I try not to now for the reason you say. I did use it previously not because of cost just pass one on the way out in morning. Heard similar from a local diesel specialist, vehicles (albeit the far newer stuff with all the electrickery on) coming in for poor running etc and its down to the 'cheap' fuel so i guess it can't just be hearsay. I also stopped using the petrol in work machinery due to problems with mowers and chainsaws etc

In that case bin my suggestion for your van... still applies to others like muttleypup though
