5 speed dogleg gearbox - newbie question

Post by HW182 »

Hi all,

I’m a newbie at this but am hoping the collective may be able to point me in the right direction.

I’ve a 1.6jx with what looks like a 5 speed dog-leg gearbox (according to the gear stick).

The problem I have is, I can’t seem to select the 1st gear. When driving, I’m pulling off in (what I assume is) 2nd gear.

Also, the reverse gear is a little hit and miss as to whether or not it engages or not.

Any ideas on how I could check etc. I feel daft asking but its making me wonder weather or not I have a 4 speed gearbox (with a 5 speed gear nob) or a 5 speed gearbox that doesn’t fully work.

Finally, I’m in Nottingham if anyone has any recommendations for specialists to help fit a short shift kit etc as I think that’s the route I’d go down eventually.

Thanks.

First thing is to get underneath and look for the gearbox code then take it from there.

Then have browse thre the Wiki, there is a lot of info that might be just what you need.

My dogleg needs a certain technique.

For first, into neutral, push to the far left, then pull back for first
For reverse, into neutral, bush to the far left, push down on the gear lever and then push forward.

Hope that helps

That is exactly how mine is too, if you try and engage reverse by pushing down too soon it will not go in
