Pierburg tuning?

Post by FrancesA »

If anyone knows of a someone in Shropshire with knowledge of tuning a Pierburg carb I'd be pleased to know. I have details of a specialist in Herefordshire, but perhaps there is someone more local...thanks. I have a 1985 Devon Moonraker 1.9 petrol watercooled.

There isn't much to 'tune' with these carbs. You can set the idle mixture so that it passes the MOT emissions test, but after that the 'tune' is taken care of by the (fixed) jet sizes. You can also adjust the idle speed, the accelerator pump, and the fast idle/choke mechanism. Mostly likely you're referring to some sort of poor running that needs to be fixed - this is usually due to air leaks, dirt in the carb jets, or a leaking or poorly set accelerator pump (leading to a flat spot when you put your foot down). This is all fixable with a few basic tools. A good starting point is to take the carb off, give it a clean inside and out, and fit a £30 service kit. Also worth checking and/or replacing the various vacuum pipes that run from the carb to the distributor and air filter, and to the choke pull-down and secondary throttle actuator on the carb itself.

Can you describe the issue(s) you're trying to fix?

My apologies - on reading that back, I realise it's not particularly helpful if you're not into working on the vehicle yourself, but I guess the point is it doesn't necessarily take a specialist to work on these carbs. If you have a trusted local garage they can probably clean the carb and fit a service kit for you, and then check for air leaks - all standard garage-type stuff.

You can try a rebuild kit & follow this excellent blog post on how to fit, reassemble & tune the carb. https://vwt25.blog/2016/09/15/pierburg- ... justments/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Alternatively you could send it to Bromyard for a complete strip down & tune. https://sites.google.com/site/pierburgc ... rburettors" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

FrancisA, It would probably be best if you outlined the problem with the carburettor such that all your friends on here can better point you in the right direction
