Brake Pressure Regulator Removal?

Post by Andyroo »

Continuing with my full strip down of my van (1982 CU) and today's plan was to remove the brake system.
A few stubborn connections, but overall it wasn't too bad until it came to removing the brake pressure regulator for the rear brakes.
The Haynes manual simply says 'undo the two nuts and bolts'. I assumed the bolts must actually be studs welded to the chassis as I couldn't find any bolt heads.
However, when I started loosening the nuts it was obvious that the bolts/studs where just turning.
I've looked closely and can't see anyway of getting to the bolt heads, if that's what they are!

Has anyone removed a regulator with this issue before?
It's a bit corroded, but it still works ok.

Why do you want to remove it ? Looks like someone has replaced the old steel pipes with quality copper, so is there a need to take things apart.

The whole chassis is being stripped ready for shot blasting and painting. Everything is coming off. This is the last item on the underside apart from the wheels as I need them on to get the van on the trailer.

They should be studs. Looking at those nuts you have probably broken the weld to the body, really need a nut splitter on them.

Thanks bigherb.

I thought they would be welded studs but I’m a bit confused as I thought that if I have broke the welds (both bolts are turning) then the unit would fall off now.

So if I do get the nuts off and the welds are broke, do you know what I should expect to find when the unit is removed?

There are spacer sleeves between the regulator and the chassis , like a length of steel pipe on each stud bolt. They could be cut off flush with the chassis and get 2 bolts welded on the chassis and slip on some spacers to bring the length to what it is now.

It would look like this, yours is the early regulator shown on the left.

That's brilliant bigherb.
I'm going to get a nut splitter tomorrow night and give it a go.
I had already looked through the Haynes and Bentley manuals to see if there was any pictures in there.
My Bentley manual does not show the regulator when removed.
I assumed all the manuals would be the same. Mine is PDF version VV91 and shows this...

Do you know what version you have?
It wasn't cheap either. :(

Well it took a few days before I could get to Machine Mart and buy some nut splitters but I wish I had of know about them at the start of this project. What a brilliant tool. Got the valve off easy enough. There was just enough room to get the smaller splitter on, but it cut the nuts without much effort.

I still can’t quite figure out what is keeping the studs in place. The one on the left is turning in the hole but won’t screw out. The one on the right is still in the threaded bit, but it’s pushed inside the hole.

I can’t get a closer look inside the hole because the steering gear is in the way.
