Camshaft 2.0l cu

Post by Itsblue »

Having stripped down my engine , the camshaft is worn to say the least I’ll post up a pic later

So I’m thinking of a mild performance cam , to maximise the output !

So having done the usual trawl of web , finding scat cams , cb performance cams , eagle cams

I came across a Uk company Newman cams , listing camshafts for air cooled type 4 engines and at significantly less cost

Has anyone had any experience of these cams that be good or bad . Also on the camshaft topic pros and cons of changing to solid lifters or keep the hydros

Thanks in advance

Do a search on Newman cams - Itchyfeet has cannibalised an Aircooled cam for his WBX as they are NLA.

You can't just swap between hydraulic / solid lifters. The cam profile needs to be different, so you need the lifters to be matched to the cam. The pushrods are different too.

As a follow up I have order a new “Road” cam from Newman’s £120 delivered it’s going to take couple of weeks
They can do either a cam for solid or hydro lifters

I’ll post up a pic once it arrives [THUMBS UP SIGN]

He fitted the cam to the camwheel in the same thread too, in one of his "WBX" threads

Why not fit a new gear? The old one may be worn. They are a one-size fits all on the type four air-cooled. (Itchyfeet swapped his in the WBX because they are size matched to the crank gear.)

So which did you go for? I'd have advised hydro.

Ok so.

Having removed the gear from the old cam and bolted to the new one , I now have some clearance issues between the oil pump and the bolts ,Comon when fitting after market cam , so I’ve seen scat bolts on cool air I think it is claim to be low profile heads , anyone have any experience of them ,

If not advice on the best way to clearance the ones I have or take some off the nuts on the back of the oil pump or both

How "big" is the clearance problem

I think I've seen someone using button head bolts, you may need to look at more specialised fastenings or take the camshaft and gear to an engineering shop to be rivetted
