1.9DG engine sounding like a machine gun when accelrating

Post by sezicoolcat »

Hi all,
Engine always had a lovely tick tick tick sound.
All of this week, it's sounding like a machine gun, especially when accelerating. Take foot off gas, doesn't sound too bad. Pulls away fine. Have always suspected it's running on 3, but have never noticed any lack of pull.

Anyone around Medway towns who can come and have a listen?

Sarah

Your description indicates it is one of the exhaust manifold gaskets that is blowing / disappeared

Could it be the tappets sometimes they get stuck open but after about half an hour drive the sound should settle :ok

Agree hole in exhaust
tappets are noisy when not accelerating
had the same with a hole next to the head where a coolant drip rusted it through.

Thanks guys.
For the noise, think football clacker thing.
Doesn't subside after a while, like tappets would.
OK, so I shall do a bit of looking around on the exhaust manifold, etc. Currently parked up on a campsite, I suspect my last for awhile. So can't really check it over on site. Looks like I'm likely to miss the Fox and Goose meet I've been looking forward to for months (unless my bid on a small tent wins) ;-)

Easiest way is to start the van, get underneath and listen / feel for hot gases escaping, before the engine gets too hot.

Yes an assistant with a nice wad of cloth over the exhaust pipe for a minute and you'll soon hear/feel if there's a leak from underneath.

No one has mentioned rod end wear. Whacking throttle open in neutral can induce a few bangs from big end or sometimes main bearing as will deliberately pulling in a high gear the noise reducing or going away as the engine unloads. Although by this time the oil pressure warning light would be on. Small end wear will often result in more of a clacking sound on an unloaded engine not unlike the football clacker.
I recently cured a similar noise by replacing the water pump which turned out to have several mm play on the bearing. To isolate noise from the ancillaries remove the fan belt and see if the noise goes away. Good luck with it anyway.

Ex husband had a listen on a visit to see the kids.
Reckons it's fast idle. Possibly air mixture not right or timing not right.

I know that the corrugated air hose has torn in two across the heat exchangers. I had asked on here years ago about that air hose but general consensus was it doesn't do anything anyway, so I've left it. I think I'll replace it.

I've also found the bleed valve (4 pipes join into it) at back of engine has a cracking in it which pushes the small pipe out. So it's loosing coolant. I can sort that. A fee things I need to do.

That's the cold climate starting hose, it's pretty common for that to not be there or damaged after 30 odd years of use. Don't think replacing it will effect your exhaust noise issue imho.

Have put a cloth over the exhaust pipe and can't see any exhaust fumes coming back out in the engine bay area, so not sure if exhaust now either. Just seems like too many factors to consider.

It's unlikely that you'll "see" anything.

Underneath with hand over the exhaust & manifold joints is how you'll find a leak if there is one. Assistant with cloth over exhaust will amplify any problem. Kids make good assistants
