Backfiring

Post by jameshamilton »

Hello hive mind...

So, day two into a two week tour of Brittany and the van is playing up

Aircooled 2.0l CU engine with twin solex carbs

The symptoms:

Hour & a half of driving the van started to feel as if it was losing a bit of power, particularly on long hills — like it was skipping a beat or something.

This continued intermittently, then it backfired (in 4th, going up a Hill)

A few more backfires, more prolonged (a second or so)moments of low power & a couple of stalls at junctions...

We’ve made it to a campsite, but have a two hour drive tomorrow planned to meet up with family

Can anyone help with how to diagnose the problem? Fuel or electrics?

Thanks

James

Could possibly be a failing Hall Sender in the dizzy James as I had the same issue and changing the distributor resolved it.

For now just check the connections into the dizzy and also check the vacuum hose from the vacuum to carb to make sure it hasn’t split.
