Failed Clutch

An update on my failed clutch

It appears that using the vw thrust bearing with the Subaru clutch plate has resulted in there being inadequate bearing on the thrust plate for the clutch fingers, this has allowed the thrust bearing to go through the centre or at least be gripped by the fingers which have then spun the thrust bearing of the lever arm.

Work continues to solve this problem.
suggestion always welcome (dynamite has been suggested but I'm not quite at that stage yet).

use the RJES Subaru release bearing adapter :ok
can't believe Fellowes didn't do that - unless there isn't enough room for the adaptor - I would have assumed the scooby diesel used the pull clutch anyway so a bit surprised you have a push clutch

Thanks, Aidan
I will pass suggestions on to Doug.
I think the bell housing is the RJES petrol one as at the time they were not interested in making one for diesel, so it is highly likely that is how I have ended up with what’s in there now.
I will have to find out how big the RJES release-bearing adapter is.

I found this whilst surfing the net

but don’t know if it would fit or work and its kind of expensive, but if all else fails it may be an option (there may be other makes as well, not looked yet.

Direct-acting "concentric" slave cylinders are a PITA! Designed to generate lots of billable main dealer workshop hours on otherwise reliable cars.
Stick with the external hydraulics, the slave will only last 5 years if you use the van a fair bit, fixable in an hour or spend all day pulling the transmission?
No contest.

Thanks, silverbullet Will bear that in mind.
Its a shame they're not reliable as it looked like a good idea, hope it doesn't turn out to be my only option.

Hi Gary, I've been in touch with Doug H via Facebook. I have a spare RJES release bearing adapter which I'm sending him tomorrow, which *may* be of help. I also think one or other of you need to speak to Rich to get his steer on getting the EE20 DMF (I assume that's what you're using) working with his BH.

A huge thank you to all for the suggestions, advice and help some possible progress today but not out of the woods yet I will try to post all the details when finished.

Progress today.
Modified the thrust bearing actuator arms(sorry probably the wrong name) and a modified support, for the Subaru thrust bearing, with what would appear to be enough clearance in the bell housing between it and the clutch spring fingers for it to work.
