Hammer on its own won't budge it. In the past I've always had success even with a lump hammer but this shrugs off a sledge. Deffo needs pulling at same time.

Yup - scissor jack and chain did it. :ok One battered backplate but new one ready to go on. Too late for Upton Blues Festival so going for the Saturday all day in the Smart. Would have liked to have camped but at least we can meet up :D

So was it the paint that caused the stiction, or just plain corrosion?

Corrosion, although I'll have to refit drum (as is) and wind out shoes etc so I can get hub off. Can't change backplate without that off ;)

Cracked axle nut off. For some reason my scaffold pole has gone walkies so bought a 5' one from local recycling centre for £4 this morning. Also (and pure fluke) I had a pair of old stock (new) brake shoes for that wheel only. Just need to clean up any grease and bleed cylinder. Then I can start looking at clutch issue

Note old and heavily battered backplate on the left

I am thinking that spring to the left is not located correctly on the auto adjuster.

Should all be at the back of the shoe, shouldn't it?

Only the springs looks wrong

the vertical one should be on the little spring plate (or it might not auto adjust properly)
and the lower thin spring should be behind the shoes so they sit flat against the backplate (might not make any difference)

It does because the extended hook should be (as it is in your photo) below the handbrake lever to stop the cable becoming unhooked.
