From 1.9 DG to 2.1 DJ running on pierburg

Post by Syncronorth »

Hi, sorry about my bad English, I'm Norwegain! Most people in Norway seems to be running the 2.1 or diesel, so I have had trouble getting answer to my question on the Norwegian T3 (T25) forum, reading previous post it looks like you guys have the knowledge I need. Couldn't find any old post with the exact information I'm looking for, sorry if I did a bad job searching.

Anyway I have a 1985 syncro with the early water system with 1.9 DG that’s not running, now I want to put in a 2.1 DJ because I already have the engine. I have changed the radiator to the bigger 2.1/diesel one, but the rest is on planning stage.

Solution A
Find a way to connect the existing cooling system to the 2.1 oil cooler

Solution B
Keep the existing coolant setup, and put in an external oil cooler
Something like this https://busschmiede.de/shop/T3-2WD-4WD- ... asserkit_1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Solution C
Get all the parts for the 2.1 cooling system and find a way to connect that to the pierburg

Solution D????

What is the best solution? How have you guys done it?

is it a Syncro built before August 1985 ie chassis year code identifier E or F ?

from August 1985, 1986 model year all syncros had oil cooler including the 1.9 so if you could find a set of water pipes for a 1.9 carb syncro set up that would work, I have some of them stripped from a 1.9 engine, but I can't be certain they are all the correct syncro specific versions, but it had an oil cooler fitted and a 2E3 carb so they may well be the correct ones, but I don't have the bleed rail and all the front to back pipe connections

My VIN is wv2zzz25ZFG113653, so it's F? The car have the old kind of fuse box if that helps?

Interesting, was it only the syncro with 1.9 DG that had oil cooler, not the 2wd? Does that system have the thermostat hosing around the same place as the 2.1? Or is it same as I have today with the termostat next to the water pump? Is the long front to back pipe different then on the old system? The two long pipes on the car is black metal that looks a tiny bit smaller then the newer ones.

your bus built May 1985

all syncros from 1986 (built August 1985 onwards) have the oil cooler, but 2wd 1.9s don't have it, just as the early syncros (which were all 1.9) didn't

from 1986 the thermostat housing is different, mounted at front of engine with a big pipe connecting to the water pump, virtually all the pipework is different

parts catalogue here http://www.oemepc.com/vw

cheapest/simplest option probably would be to use what you have and fit an additional oil cooler

do you still have the early 1.9 syncro exhaust system with the cast 90' connectors to the back box ? The exhaust changed in 1985 as well to a better breathing more complex set up

Think that is the way I will go, any recommendation on oil cooler setup?

Yes I have the old exhaust system, but did order a new one from vwspeedshop.com, dont know how that will be with oil-cooler.. One guy on the Norwegian forum bought a 90 degree adapter ( https://www.pegasusautoracing.com/produ ... RecID=9710" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ) but not tested it. Guess that wont help on the syncro because of the splash plate?

The Laminova is well suited to Syncro use as it's water cooled and will work well at low speed/high load situations. The sandwich plate is not as deep as the standard VW cooler, so the standard filter might fit with a speedshop exhaust. If not, there's a smaller alternative available.
