Are the joins in the driver's side (RHD) exhaust heat exchanger of the exhaust meant to be air tight? Received a brand new heat exchanger and the joints between the tubing and the Larger part of the component is Leaky. Thought I'd check if this is normal before mithering the supplier.

Is this the early exhaust system? But yes JP isn't that good a quality, Ernst is better but there is not a lot of choice for some parts of the system.

Yes it's early exhaust system. I'm wondering whether to send back to supplier and ask for replacement or patch with gun gum. Second option feels wrong for a new component

JP exhausts have a lifetime guarantee, if its wrong send it back.

when mine was new it was blowing a bit... put a little sealer on and it sorted it been on van 7/8 years and still fine and sounds nice to

The return is always an option, although in terms of time then sealing it may be the better option. It's a very rigid welded joint anyway so unlikely to cause trouble.

try it and see mate mines good worth a go stainless when it gets hot should self seal any way unless gap is to big but sealer is belt n braces

Recently the weld where the downpipe comes out of the silencer became loose after 6/7 years on mine. Went to JP (i live a mile away) They replaced the silencer no problem.

Just wanted to say thanks for all the feedback and to report back as I heard from the supplier (Brickwerks).

It turns out that the join between the smaller tubing (exhaust) and the larger tubing (heat exchanger) is designed not to be air tight so air can be sucked in to supply air as part of the warm air riser to the Carb. The smaller diameter tubing runs right through from the cylinder's exhaust port and it heats the air around it that then rises and supplies warm air to the carb for cold starts.

Moral, seems to be, no gun gum needed, just fit as supplied. I'm always very impressed with the knowledge of the folks at BW when it comes to the parts they supply, it's what keeps me going back to them. I will admit that I haven't tried other suppliers who may also have a good level of knowledge.
