Heater always on!

Post by rob1927 »

Hello all could anyone offer any advice?

The heater in my van is always on no matter what I do with the dashboard controls.

Is it likely to be the valve on the heater coolant circuit?

The dash is coming out soon to sort the rust out on the windscreen so it would be good to sort the heater whilst it’s out.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

The heater control cables attach to a lever on a valve. The cables could have come unattached or the valve could be faulty. This valve is sometimes located in the cab near where your clutch foot rests or I believe it can be found under the van somewhere around the spare wheel.

As above the cable is not working the valve or it has seized, it is above the spare wheel behind the radiator.

Thanks guys - that picture is brilliant :-)

That'l hopefully help 2 of my "current" problems:

1) Heater doesn't work (never has) - but it will come & off of its own accord randomly (have a new blower to fit but been putting off removing the dash for the last 12-13 yrs - will be "new old stock" by the time I get around to it - must do it this winter (together with replacing the washer pipes).

2) Radiator fan makes a racket when it comes on - probably catching on something (was wondering how i'd access it without removing the radiator).

Cheers folks, I’ll have s good poke about when the dash is out, should be over the next couple of weeks or so.

Cheers for the photo too. Much appreciated, I’ll keep you posted with my findings.

High top ratty, I’m sure you can get the fan off the back of the radiator if you semi remove the rad, as in unbolt it from the van but leave the pipes connected.

It’s not ideal, as there’s not much room to work but I’m sure I did mine a while ago this way.

The heater valve can be ok visually, but not close off fully. Mine was like that latterly, you could get hot air, or warm air, never cold air. I’ll persist with adjusting the cable to it, it may need a replacement. Unfortunately it’s behind the radiator...

I think I’ll go ahead and just replace the valve ,and give the cables a good inspection/going over. If the valve isn’t goosed it’s probably only a matter of time before it is so might as well be replaced.

Valve replaced with a new one. Much better now but not perfect. I’ll have a look at the flaps in the heater module.

Thanks everyone.
