well it will work but it won't be as good as a non scratched one, I wouldn't use it personally unless I was skint and couldn't afford a replacement or could not get old of a replacement.

Do you think it's scratched or cracked ?

Try using a sharp needle to see if you can "catch" in it. Looks like a crack to me - the vertical scrapes appear to go into it.

Do you have spare barrels?

No, I don't have any spare barrels, these are oversize 94.5mm as well which will make life more difficult.

I have a spare (scratched) standard barrel if you want it to bore out to oversize.
Not sure if oversized barrels had oversized outer dimensions though or just thinner walls.

might be just as easy to pick up a set of pistons and barrels standard size and move this lot on.

It doesn't appear to be deep at all - the honing had touched in it.

I have done a bit more honing this afternoon and I am now pretty convinced that it is a scratch. More than that, it appears that it has been caused by the compression ring that broke, I think the ring dug in for some reason, made the gouge and then merrilly moved up an down without causing further damage beyond the initial scratches you can see on the bore. The broken ring is about 10mm longer than the scratch shown below.

I have taken about 0.01mm off the barrel this afternoon, it now measures 54.555mm.

I also took a measurement for the barrel thickness, it's currently 6.64mm, so if the wall of a standard barrel measures 7.15mm we know the oversize barrels are thinner walled, if they are about the same we know they have a different external diameter. Alternatively the external OD of mine is 108mm.

Time for another picture. The piston scuffs at the bottom of the bore have now gone,

Any more thoughts on that barrel ?

As I see it I have 3 choices as I'm not yet content with the finish / remaining marks, even though the photo gives much higher resolution than the naked eye

a, finish off the honing, the more I do the more life I am taking off that cylinder, but it's still pretty good
b, source another 94.5mm barrel - but from where and I have doubts they are available other than as a set
c, use a standard barrel, get it bored out to 94.5mm , but as Bob said, I don't know if the oversize is thin wall or oversize on the external dimension too. I could do with someone measuring one of their spares.

In the meantime I have cleaned up the other head. Seems OK in the combustion chamber, but I have three snapped studs to get out on this side

My finger (top centre) is pointing at an area where there's some metal missing, about 0.6-1mm deep. I don't want coolant getting under the seal and eroding any more so that needs to be filled

Where was that measured? I'll measure my spare at the same place tonight. :ok

I measured across the outside of the barrel, around the middle point, not at the top where there is a lip

Cheers BBB

:ok

Sorry for the delay. My spare also 108 half way down.
106 where it's recessed into the head.
